How privileged am I to be able to walk through the vineyard and taste the flavour in the fruit right off the vine. Magnifique!

Hunter Wine Show - Two Rivers 2006 Hidden Hive Verdelho

Hunter Wine Show judges seldom award gold medals to verdelho, but this one from the Upper Hunter Inglewood Vineyard struck gold in the 2007 show's 2006 verdelho dry white class.

It's a wine that would go nicely with spring rolls, ham and cheese omelette or chicken Caesar salad. It is light gold with olive green tints and has jasmine scents. Ripe tangelo flavour shows on the front of the palate and passionfruit and subtle honey and toast characters chime in the middle palate. Smooth flinty acid comes through at the finish.

It can be bought in wine stores and from the recently opened Two Rivers Cellar Door in Yarrawa Road, Denman. Ageing: 2 years. Rating: 4.5 stars

2005 Stones Throw Semillon

Made by talented Jim Chatto at Monarch, this inexpensive Upper Hunter semillon is tremendous value for money. It offers all the subtle lime/lemon and herbal aromas and crisp palate intensity you'd expect of top-line semillon.

The colour retains some green tinges, and the palate is refined and crisp, nicely poised and easy to drink. It has good persistence and seamless texture. It drinks well young but will no doubt age gracefully for several years.

4 stars - Two Rivers 2005 Stones Throw Semillon

A well-focused wine with some passionfruit on the nose and a long, lingering, seamless palate loaded with intense citrus flavours balanced by great acid structure.

Bargain Buy - Good Living - 2004 Stones Throw Semillon

Bargain Buy - $13.00
A typical lemon-scented, minerally Hunter Semillon, bright and refreshing, with a clean but soft finish that's not too tart. Very more-ish and with just 11.1% alcohol, it's great with seafood. Best now to 2009.

Epicure Uncorked - The Age- 2004 Lightning Strike Chardonnay

The Two Rivers wines from the Upper Hunter Valley are well-princed in the scheme of things. This Chardonnay is a fruit-driven style of straightforward personality with simple, light, melony fruit that's juicy and fresh. Oak is barely perceptible and bracing acidity keeps it together with a clean tang.

Good Living - 2004 Hidden Hive Verdelho

Bargain of the Week 2004 Two Rivers Hidden Hive Verdelho

Typical Hunter Valley Verdelho musk powderppuff aromoas: estery, clean and attractive, with a touch of sweetness which will give it broad appeal. There's no great depth of flavour but it's aromatic and easy-going.

Bargain Buy: 2003 Winters Mist Merlot

"This greatly textured, medium bodied dry red has good itensity of plummy merlot fruit on the soft palate. And there is plenty of savoury oak to balance the well-handled acid. This could even benefit from a light chilling if being enjoyed al fresco during the summer.

A good match for pork stir fry or pork spareribs, veal chops or good old bangers 'n mash. The Hunter is renowned for Shiraz, but this is another indication that the region also producers decent budget-priced merlot."
